His legal ability is rated "AV", which is the highest rating afforded to lawyers by their peers. He is a Charter Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, an invitation only, honorary society representing less than one half of one percent of American lawyers for effectiveness and accomplishment in litigation and trial work, along with ethical reputation. He has been listed among the Georgia Super Lawyers in Atlanta Magazine and has been selected as a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, an organization recognizing lawyers for skill, civility and integrity. Mr. Moffett's civil defense practice involves property and casualty claims litigated in state and federal courts, including products liability, premises liability and automobile and motor carrier accidents. He further handles multi-district litigation involving toxic tort claims. Mr. Moffett frequently advises and represents insurers on matters of insurance coverage, prosecutes declaratory judgment actions for insurers and defends actions filed against insurers in both state and federal courts. He also prosecutes large and complex subrogation cases for insurers. Mr. Moffett consults and works with third party administrators who monitor claims and cases for business entities which either are self-insured or have a self insured retention as part of a liability insurance policy. These claims and cases involve both tort and commercial matters. Mr. Moffett further represents public and private employers in employment and constitutional based cases. He has and continues to represent many county and municipal school systems and independent schools in Georgia in cases involving student supervision and discipline and teacher and administrator employment practices. Mr. Moffett has handled many appellate cases at the state and federal levels. See listing under Representative Cases' section. Mr. Moffett graduated cum laude from the University of Georgia in 1987, and received his law degree from the Emory University School of Law in 1990. Thereafter, and while practicing law, he served for several years as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Emory teaching appellate practice. Mr. Moffett was awarded many honors while in law school, including selection as Best Oralist at the 1989 Georgia Intrastate Moot Court Competition, Winner and Best Advocate at the 1989 and 1990 National Moot Court Competitions, and recipient of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers Litigation Award. He also held membership in the Order of the Barristers and the Emory Moot Court Society, of which he was selected as the Outstanding Member in 1990. Mr. Moffett is the author of "Winning at Moot Court" (Sum and Substance, 1992) and the co-author of "Creation and Existence of Agency Relationship" (Georgia Jurisprudence: Employment and Labor, Lawyer's Cooperative Publishing, 1995). He has authored additional seminar papers and presented legal seminars annually to his clients on a variety of legal topics. Mr. Moffett is a member of the Atlanta Bar Association, where he is a Charter Lifetime Fellow of the Atlanta Bar Foundation. He is a member of the State Bar of Georgia, the Defense Research Institute, Georgia Defense Lawyers Association, the Atlanta Claims Association and the Lawyers Club of Atlanta. He currently serves on the board of directors for the Georgia Defense Lawyers Association. Mr. Moffett was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. He and his wife Diane have two daughters, Kate and Megan. The family attends Peachtree Road United Methodist Church, where Matt teaches adult Sunday School classes and serves on many church committees. He has served on the board of directors of Global Health Action, a non-profit organization addressing the world's most pressing health problems, and he currently serves on the board of directors for the Silver Lake Civic Association.
